My Name is Kevin McCloud; Welcome to Grand Designs
After a beautiful and relaxing train ride from Lisbon to Fundao and a school bus ride to Sao Jorge we were ready to meet our new WWOOF hosts and go home to get settled in. They weren’t there to meet us yet, so we dropped into the local bar for a beer while we waited.    A bunch of locals swarmed us and wanted to help out even though we tried to tell them it was fine, and we had been told...

Marrawah Makes the News in Portugal!
Just before Ned and I left for overseas, I spent a week at home which happily coincided with the second annual Cold Water Classic. For those out of the know, it’s a surf competition which travels to Tasmania, Scotland, South Africa, Canada and California. Aka, the “most Northern, the most Southern, the wildest, the coldest and the most classic surf contest on the planet”....

Still Lovin' et Lisbon
Bairro Alto during the day. I write this as I watch Ned look at our newly acquired (super cheap but not exactly super small!) tent and then look at his already-bursting backpack. :) The last few days have been filled with self-catering supermarket missions, hill-hiking and working on my Birkenstock tan in 28+degrees gorgeous sunny weather. Did anyone else picture the Europe part of our trip...

Headache, Headache, Go Away, Come Again Another...
Photo from oscar-tramor’s Flickr stream. I was too pissed to bother taking photos. We went out for our own experience of Bairro Alto’s nightlife last night and Niko, Ned and I are hurting today. Theresa drove and therefore didn’t hammer the €2 litre bottles of beer. There seemed to be hundreds of bars in the district with people spilling out onto the narrow streets. We bought...

Too Much Time Spent Rolling the Chicken
We made it to Lisbon! Whoo hoo to ash calming down and letting us leave the island. Flights had been cancelled for two days but we managed to get off the ground when it counted! Can’t believe the same ash cloud is still affecting aviation in Europe. When I said that, Ned responded with der, it isn’t possible, has to be another eruption and proceded to get on the internet to prove me...

Ponta de Sao Lourence
Ned and I spent our last day off in Madeira on a bus. Not really, only 3.5 hours of it. Sooo worth it as the bus took us to the island’s beautiful Eastern Pennisula; Ponta de Sao Lourence. If Ned thought the lava tubes last week were cool, boy was he in for a treat! “That was some of the best, the best outcrop I’ve ever seen.” Wow, big call there buddy! Teasing...

Lindsey, you must Cleeeeean!
The title of this post is brought to you by my first Swiss host family’s kids who used to run down the hallway yelling this at me. Oh, good times. After the Selete-Tanty the other day (Mario, Patricia’s Dad made her apologise but it doesn’t matter anyway because I’m not inviting her to my 8th birthday party) I have been assigned as Elsa-helper. Fajã dos Padres has four...

New Personal Record: It took me three weeks to...
As the Creatives at Clemenger used to endlessly tease me about, I tear up pretty easily. It starts with a prickly heat creeping up my neck, a bottom lip quiver and my voice, so high-pitched, can only be heard by dogs. Blub, blub, blub. Some people, when they’re stressed, get angry or quiet or both. I crack and then I cry. So that EVERYBODY knows about it. Snot on my face, you know what...

A Trip to the Centre of the Earth and Back
It all began with the lend of a gutless Euro-vehicle from Patricia and two days off to explore. Who could have thought it would take us all the way to the Earth’s core..? This is a typical view through the middle of the island. Ned did so well with driving on the wrong side of the narrowest roads with a crappy clutch! I was all bluff at the beginning, thinking I’d have to step in...

A Cute Budgeting Idea for Travellers Who Don't...
All this time “working” on the computer reintroduced me to my naughty habit of obsessively reading blogs. But anyway, one of my favourites, Prêt à Voyager has put me onto author, Kate Bingaman-Burt and her book, Obsessive Consumption: What did you buy today? I reckon her drawings are super cute and in a similar style to my doodles. Perhaps I could steal her idea (for the...
